Racquinghem, outside St. Omer, December 1914. Surrounded by the trees shown in the distance was the Chateau de Bambec where we officers were billeted. Annotated on back of picture - My 1st sketch in the war area taken from the entrance to house used as Officers' Mess. The grounds of the Chateau de Bambec (officers' billet), Wardreques. Northern France under flood - 3rd-10th January 1915.

John Empson Tindall joined the Royal Engineers as a Lieutenant and rose to the rank of Captain in the 1st Home Counties Field Company, Royal Engineers (later the 490th Field Company, Royal Engineers), 8th Division, BEF and then became Major commanding the 505th (Wessex) Field Company, 57th Division, BEF.
