Looking toward Bailleul from Sailly from Mount Kemmel and Mont des Cats in distance. The area seen here was about half of that captured by the Germans in their last desperate attempt to get through to the Channel ports in 1918. Annotated on back of picture - Aug 22nd '15 - A typical bit of Flanders. Back of Bac St. Maur looking towards England, Mt. Kemmel & Mont de Cats in distance. This was the scene of the German advance in March 1918.

John Empson Tindall joined the Royal Engineers as a Lieutenant and rose to the rank of Captain in the 1st Home Counties Field Company, Royal Engineers (later the 490th Field Company, Royal Engineers), 8th Division, BEF and then became Major commanding the 505th (Wessex) Field Company, 57th Division, BEF.
