Morbeque, south west of Hazebrouck. These hills formed the "wall" referred to in the famous order to the army, ("You are now back to the wall, and there must be no further retreat") when the last German offensive was at its height in 1918. Annotated on back of picture - The scene of the "Back to the Wall" fighting. This scene was just behind the front trenches after the German defensive of 1918. I prepared this area for defence in 1916.

John Empson Tindall joined the Royal Engineers as a Lieutenant and rose to the rank of Captain in the 1st Home Counties Field Company, Royal Engineers (later the 490th Field Company, Royal Engineers), 8th Division, BEF and then became Major commanding the 505th (Wessex) Field Company, 57th Division, BEF.
