Spring & December. "Cottage" RE store at La Chapelle d'Armentieres sketched from the front line trenches. This was destroyed by shellfire in May 1917 owing to its purpose being betrayed to the enemy by Aussies (Australians) fetching stores away in daylight against the strictest orders. Annotated on back of picture - "Cottage" RE dump, Chapelle d'Armentieres - destroyed by shellfire (through Aussies' carelessness) May 4 '17.

Major JOHN EMPSON TINDALL, MC, b.1885. John Empson Tindall joined the Royal Engineers as a Lieutenant and rose to the rank of Captain in the 1st Home Counties Field Company, Royal Engineers (later the 490th Field Company, Royal Engineers), 8th Division, BEF and then became Major commanding the 505th (Wessex) Field Company, 57th Division, BEF.
