Fort Rompu, Bac St. Maur - our billet - (the name having no connection with modern military works) on the Armentieres-Sailly road, directly behind Fleurbaix. Here we were awaiting the expected German offensive - March 20th 1918. Fell into German hands three days later. Annotated on back of picture - Fort Rompu (our Billet), Bac St. Maur - March 20/18. John Empson Tindall joined the Royal Engineers as a Lieutenant and rose to the rank of Captain in the 1st Home Counties Field Company, Royal Engineers (later the 490th Field Company, Royal Engineers), 8th Division, BEF and then became Major commanding the 505th (Wessex) Field Company, 57th Division, BEF.
